BULLETIN # 1: General Information

The International Baksan Schools ``Particles and Cosmology'' are held traditionally since 1981 by the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INR) at Baksan Valley, Kabardino-Balkaria, Russian Federation. The 11th Baksan School of 2001 - the first one in the Millennium 3000 - as well as the preceding one, is organized by INR in cooperation with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia), the Kabardino-Balkarian State University (Nalchik, Russia), and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (Los Alamos, USA).

Baksan Valley in Caucasus Mountains is a home of the famous Baksan Neutrino Observatory of INR with its underground installations including Gallium - Germanium Neutrino Telescope (SAGE experiment), Underground Scintillation Telescope, and low-background facilities, as well as surface EAS arrays ``Carpet'' and ``Andyrchi''.

The area, close to the highest summit of Europe - gorgeous double-peaked Mount Elbrus, is known for its beauty, and also as a downhill skiing resort. As some foreign tourists confessed after visiting Prielbrusje, - "Terskol is the best place in the world"; - "Cheget is a place for crazy skiers, but anybody who has visited this place just one time comes here forever and ever".

The Baksan Schools gather active physicists with emphasis on experimentalists working in non-accelerator particle physics and particle astrophysics. Lectures include general reviews on recent developments in particle physics and cosmology and talks on more specific theoretical and experimental ideas and results.

You can also get some idea of the scope of the School from Proceedings of the previous meetings of this series published by the World Scientific, USA and Singapore (1991, 1993, 1995), and by the publishing department of INR, Moscow (1997, 1999).
